For most pregnant women who had a vaginal delivery, you can check for a gap 4-5 days post-delivery.

Follow the steps below:

· Lie on your back with your knees bent.

· Using three middle fingers of one hand press down into your tummy just above your belly button.

· Lift your head and shoulders

· You should feel the muscles come towards your fingers, closing the ‘gap'.


How many fingers are needed to fill the gap?


A gap of 2 fingers width or less after pregnancy is considered normal.


However, if the gap is 3 fingers or more you may have DRAM and need to see a Physiotherapist.

Through pregnancy, the growth of the baby in the womb puts pressure against the walls of the abdominal muscles. Typically, within the last trimester, the separation of the stomach muscles can occur.


Hormones

With the increase in the hormone oestrogen and relaxin, there's an increase on the stretch of the connective tissues such as the linea alba to accommodate the growth of the baby. the Linea Alba is found in our midline - the dark mark in the midline of the stomach is due to the tension through when it is stretched.


Pressure The pressure from the baby, the fluids and even gravity itself causes the pelvic floor to stretch and drop down causing weakening of the pelvic floor. The pressure also increases the stretch on the Linea Alba, which promotes the chances of developing Diastasis Recti.

Posture

Some pregnant women may experience a feeling of being off-balance as the pregnancy progresses and with the increase in weight, the centre of gravity is affected.

Women during pregnancy have a wider stance with their feet and adopt a wider base of support to compensate for the decrease in balance.


These changes are NORMAL between pregnancy and in most cases, the gaps will reduce and will produce no symptoms.
